Her Secret in Downtown Phoenix

Her Secret Is PatienceHer Secret Is Patience. A quote from the American philosopher and essayist, Ralph Waldo Emerson is actualized in Janet Echelman's masterpiece. Her Secret Is Patience is a public art sculpture cleverly placed in downtown Phoenix, Arizona, between 1st and Central avenues along with Phoenix real estate. The centerpiece serves, as some would say, the heart of the city.

Janet Echelman's creation was a joint collaboration between her and a team of award-winning engineers, architects, planners and fabricators. Her interpretation is made to life by a massive netting, 100 ft tall with three support poles 102 ft., 125 ft. and 145 ft. tall and 38 ft off the ground. Consisting of painted, galvanized steel, polyester twine netting, and colored lights is designed to move fluidly to the desert winds. The sculpture magnificently reflects Arizona's enormous cumulus clouds and the blossoms of the cereus cactus, bountifully found throughout the region.

This monumental visual delight displayed since April 2009 obviously did not go unnoticed. Receiving numerous distinctions such as the Best Public Art in 2009 by the Phoenix New Times, the Environmental Excellence Award in 2009 for the Art in Public Places category by the Valley Forward Association, and the Award for Excellence in Structural Engineering 2008 by the Arizona Structural Engineering.

Amidst the bustling city pace, it would be a refreshing feeling to pause and take a minute of our day to appreciate the beauty and wonder emanated by the floating sculpture in downtown Phoenix. The visual masterpiece is something iconic that no one should ever miss.

They say art is an expression – it speaks to you. The Her Secret Is Patience sculpture has a lot to say about the city – sights, sounds, happenings – dynamic Phoenix! Come and visit downtown Phoenix and witness the “heart” of the city. Be one of the proud many to go home and say, 'You'll never guess what I saw in Phoenix!'
